2010 was a busy year for the Iowa Hospital Association. All year, IHA has hosted a number of events and educational programs on behalf of hospital advocates from around the state such as Legislative Day and the IHERF Swinging for Scholars golf outing.
IHA also proudly promoted health care careers in Iowa and honored another year’s worth of Hospital Heroes at the 81st IHA Annual Meeting. IHA travelled to every district in the state to interact with members and celebrate the great work being accomplished every day.

Recently, Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines in collaboration with Air Methods, Bell Helicopter and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) unveiled its newest Mercy One air ambulance equipped with state-of-the-art navigation equipment. This technology will enable pilots to fly in more inclement weather situations than ever before.
“We miss about 240 flights a year due to the fact that the weather minimums are such that we can’t fly,” said Dan Keough, director of emergency transport services at Mercy. “We feel that with this new technology being state-of-the-art and the first of its kind in Iowa, we will recapture at least 20 percent of those weather misses that we currently have now.”
After testing is complete, Mercy plans to use its hospital as the first location to deploy Mercy One but soon after will include landing sites at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Mercy Medical Center-Centerville, Monroe County Hospital in Albia as well as a non-hospital based helipad being built in Stuart.
Dan Keough and Dennis Cochran, Mercy One Program Manager, Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines sat down with IHA to discuss the new Mercy One helicopter and the impact it’s likely to have across the health care industry.

When her husband, ABC’s newly appointed co-anchor Bob Woodruff, was severely injured by a roadside bomb while covering the war in Iraq, Lee Woodruff’s life changed in an instant. She had to learn to put her own grief aside to care for her four children as well as her husband, who was pushed close to death by traumatic brain injuries.
Lee Woodruff took some time to talk with IHA about her family’s incredible experience and to provide some insight ahead of her keynote presentation taking place on the final day of the 2010 IHA Annual Meeting.

The health care industry in Iowa knows that in order to cultivate a healthy workforce, you have to work to inspire the youth of the state. That’s exactly what Des Moines University and the Central Iowa Area Health Education Center are attempting to do with their annual YES MED summer camp.
Staff members say that the effects of the program can be seen immediately in the students and they’re sure that, for some, it could prove to be the catalyst for a future career.

Recently, the Iowa Hospital Association hosted the sixth annual Swinging for Scholars fundraiser golf tournament at The Harvester Golf Club north of Des Moines.
A record number of participants turned out to support the only fundraiser held for the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation Health Care Careers Scholarship Fund (IHERF). More than $100,000 in scholarship funds were contributed by a number of Iowa hospitals and other businesses and individuals who are committed to helping educate health care professionals and keep those professionals practicing in Iowa.
This year, 31 scholarships were awarded totaling $93,000 with more than $500,000 having been awarded since the inception of the program. Eight of the 31 scholarship recipients were present at the event to formally accept their award as well as to express their gratitude for what the scholarship will enable for their careers.
