The total acute and Medicare acute average lengths of stay (LOS) in Iowa hospitals have been on an overall decline from 1994 through 2008. Data from the IHA DATABANK program shows that acute average LOS declined from five days in 1994 to 4.1 days in fourth quarter 2008. Medicare acute average LOS declined from 6.8 days in 1994 to 4.1 days in fourth quarter 2008.

The combination of inadequate Medicare payment and shifts in utilization to the outpatient setting has contributed to the declines over the last 14 years. Contact Perry Meyer at IHA with any questions.
